Izanami in kanji

Pronounced i·za·na·mi

Izanami is a goddess of Japanese mythology. With her husband Izanagi she made the Japanese islands and gave birth to countless gods — and in that the eight million gods trace back to her, she ranks, together with Izanagi, among the highest of them all. Bearing the fire god Kagutsuchi cost her her life, and she went down to Yomi, the land of the dead. Her husband came for her — but he saw what she had become, and the two were parted. A goddess who began by giving birth and ended as the goddess of the dead: that is Izanami. Give a dōjutsu Izanami's name, and a Japanese reader senses a power that surpasses even Izanagi.
